The High Court on Sunday acquitted 12 death-row convicts and four life-timers from sensational Bogra triple murder case that took place in Bogra in 2004.
The HC bench comprising Justice Syed Md Dastagir Hossain and Justice Emdadul Haque Azad passed the acquittal order after hearing on a death reference case. Those who were awarded capital punishment by the trial court earlier are: Abdur Rashid, Saiful Islam, Khat Jamal, Farayejul, Nipun, Gani, Baset, Lal Miah, Affar Ali, Shafiqul, Asraf Ali Malek and Basu.
Zahidul, Wajedul, Safer and Mohsin earlier got life term imprisonment in the case. But, the HC acquitted all the accused persons from the sensational murder case on Sunday.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Barrister Anwarul Islam Shahin appeared for the accused while assistant attorney general Aminur Rahman represented the state.
According to case statement, one Abdul Baki and his two sons were killed on September 23 in 2004 following the land dispute altercation.
Kafi, brother of Baki, filed a case next day with Danut police station against 19 persons.
After investigation, police submitted charge sheet against 40 persons in connection with the sensational murder case.
On November 6, 2007, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal awarded death penalty to 12 people and lifetime imprisonment to four while it acquitted 24 others.
The convicts appealed against the verdict in 2007. After hearing on the appeal the HC passed the order.
