Rejecting the newspaper reports, saying electoral codes of conduct are being changed for the upcoming general elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rokibuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said that the Election Commission (EC) had not yet decided on changing or amending the electoral codes of conduct for the next parliamentary polls. “I have read the newspaper reports saying electoral codes of conduct have been changed and finalised for the upcoming general elections. But, we are yet to take any decision in this regard. We haven’t yet seen what the draft contains. We need to scrutinise this. The commission did not hold any meeting in this regard either. Yet, some newspapers published reports on this,” he said.
Rokibuddin made the remarks while talking to the reporters at the commission’s office in the city. Replying to a query where any suggestion from political parties would be sought regarding amendment of codes of conduct, he said, “If the changes are minor, we will not take suggestions. But if it needs major changes, we will see whether we have sufficient time to take suggestion.”
“The codes of conduct of the national elections have been changed in different times. We have done it too. There are some lacunas in it, which need to be amended through additions or corrections,” the CEC said.
