Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday denied making any comment about not being embarrassed by ruling Awami League lawmaker
Golam Maula Rony’s act of beating up journalists on July 20.
“I do not need to make such a comment. Rony’s statement was not correct. No discussion took place about his resignation,” she said while talking to reporters at her office in Parliament. The Speaker called all concerned not to involve her in any dispute by spreading misleading information. Whatever he (Rony) disclosed at the press briefing, it was his personal matter, she added.
The Speaker also denied calling whips during the meeting.
Meanwhile, whip ASM Firoz told reporters that he went to the office of the Speaker few minutes after Rony had entered the office.
“There was no discussion regarding Rony’s designation. Rather, he wanted to know whether he could get protection in the case,” he added.
Rony on Tuesday morning announced that he was going to resign. Later, he met the Speaker at her office in the afternoon. Emerging from a meeting with the Speaker at her office, the AL lawmaker claimed that the Speaker assured him that neither she nor Parliament became embarrassed following his July 20 activities.
“The Speaker also asked me to discuss the issue with the party high-ups,” Rony claimed.
Rony on Saturday beat up reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash, for Independent TV, at his Topkhana Road office in the capital.
