Speakers at a discussion meeting on Monday said absence of system to protect natural habitats of tigers, unbridled infiltration of poachers, food crisis, conflict between tiger population and human beings are main factors that now stand in the way for conservation of the endangered species
The west wing of Sundarban Forest Division and the Khulna district administration jointly organised the meeting marking Global Tiger Day.
Earlier a brief rally was held at the circuit house maidan at around 9:30am, followed by a colourful procession, headed by the Khulna divisional commissioner MA Jalil with participation of the people of all spheres of life.
Later at around 10:30am, a discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the office of deputy commissioner with the divisional commissioner as chief guest.
Presided over by the conservator of forests in charge of Khulna circle Zahir Hossain Khandaker, the discussion meeting was addressed as special guests by deputy commissioner Mesbah uddin, Khulna police super Golam Rouf Khan PPM and director of Khulna Environment Department Tarun Kanti Shikder.
The assistant conservator of forests, Abu Naser Mohsin Hossain, delivered speech as main speaker on the significance for observing Global Tiger Day.
The chief guest said it was social and moral responsibility of the people to save the endangered tiger population.
He called upon the officials of the forest department to work out an effective plan for saving this endangered species of the Sundarbans. He also stressed the need for raising mass awareness for tiger conservation.
