Local leaders of different political parties of New Paltan area of Azimpur at a human chain on Thursday called on the government to take steps for widening the road near the Azimpur old graveyard.
The leaders and the people from all walks of life formed
the one-hour human chain at Azimpur at 11:00am.The road in New Paltan area near the East wall of the graveyard is so narrow that people of Azimpur and its adjacent areas face troubles while moving through the road, said convener of New Paltan Line Development Committee at the programme.
The then Dhaka City Corporation had taken an initiative to widen the road taking eight feet land from the graveyard.
The work was near its completion when a High Court verdict stopped the extension work.
Now the city corporation is trying to stop the work and give back the land to the graveyard authorities, the leaders said.
The human chain stretched from the gate of the old graveyard to the China Building of Pilkhana Road.
The people of New Paltan Line, Nababganj, Hazaribagh, Azimpur and Kamrangirchar area took part in the human chain.
Actor and freedom fighter Quamrul Alam Khan Khasru, former commissioner of the DCC Humayun Kabir, politician Badal Khan, Fuad Alam and others led the human chain.
