Mahfizur Rahman Sagar set a personal best but failed to advance to the next round of the 50m freestyle event at the FINA World Swimming Championship in Barcelona on Friday, finishing 59th out of 105 participants. In the preliminary round, Sagar touched the wall in 24.39 seconds, 0.02 seconds faster than his previous career best time. He won gold at the 8th Bangladesh Games in 24.41 seconds, a national record for the 50m freestyle.
Sagar’s performance meant that he met the Bangladesh team’s mandate at
the World Swimming Championship, which is to set personal best times.
Earlier in the competition, Anik Islam fell short of his personal best and finished 61st among 78 swimmers in the 50m butterfly event.
Mahfuza Akhter Shila will take to the pool today in the 50m breaststroke event. Shila won the gold medal in the Bangladesh Games with a time of 35.43 seconds.
The Bangladesh national swimming team will return home on August 5.
