The Fire Service and Civil Defence has spotted 1,356 high-rise buildings in the capital that have not obtained ‘no objection’ certificates from the authorities.
The fire service has taken legal actions through mobile courts against owners of 38 high-rises this year, and started sending notices to others who have violated the rules, FSCD director general Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan told New Age.
‘At present notices are being issued to other violators asking them to comply with FSCD laws in respect of fire safety. Otherwise, legal action will be taken against them,’ he said.
New Age on July 20 published a report titled ‘Most buildings since 2009 in Dhaka have no fire approval.’
According to the information of the Anti-Corruption Commission, FSCD and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, about 95 per cent of more than 11,000 buildings constructed in Rajuk areas between 2009 and 2012 had no fire service approval.
The FSDC act requires fire service approval for construction of a building of six storeys or above.
The ACC found most of the buildings that were built with Rajuk approval during the period were above six storeys.
Commission officials said that some corrupt officers of Rajuk had given the buildings fake certificates for bribes.
