Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant at Pabna in October, formally kicking off its construction work.
The decision for laying the foundation was taken at the third meeting of the national committee on nuclear power plant project with Hasina in the chair.
“The premier is expected to lay the foundation stone in the first week of October,” State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman said after the meeting.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, also discussed the progress made so far in setting up the country’s first nuclear plant, he told The Daily Star.
The premier expressed satisfaction over the ongoing activities of the project, he added.
The government has already struck a number of deals with Russia to build the 1000-megawatt plant to meet the energy crisis.
Russia has agreed to provide Bangladesh with 90 percent cost for constructing the plant.
Ministers and secretaries of the finance, agriculture, environment, water resources, foreign, planning and science and technology ministries are the members of the national committee.
