The government has approved the revised fund of Tk 409 crore for implementation of the project to supply gas through pipelines to the south-western region of the country including Khulna.
This approval came from a meeting of Executive Committee of National Economic Council, held Tuesday. The Sundarban Gas Company Limited project director, SM Rezaul Islam, hoped that allocation of the fund would help complete the remaining works for implementation of the project.
The project director said works for setting up pipes for gas transmission from Bheramara to Khulna could not proceed further because of manifold reasons including problems in setting up pipes beneath the Rivers Padma and Rupsha, though it was launched in 2008.
The project, being jointly financed by the Asian Development Bank and the Bangladesh Government, would be able to supply gas through pipelines to 21 Southern districts including Khulna, Barisal and Bhola, the director added.
The director said the works of installing gas pipes beneath the Padma were being done with the help of a Japanese company which needed huge money and the allocation of the fund was meant mainly for that purpose.
