Firework Accidents On Eid
Some children may become disabled
Say doctors
Some children out of the 12 who were injured while playing with fireworks on Eid-ul-Fitr in separate incidents in Barisal are in danger of becoming physically challenged.
With Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital having no burn unit, The Daily Star on Thursday found the injured children receiving treatment in another unit and lying on the floor due to a shortage of beds.
Hospital sources said six of the children are still undergoing treatment at the hospital while some of the remaining children were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and others were discharged.
The six still in SBMCH are undergoing treatment at orthopaedic unit of the hospital.
Dr S Mahmud, registrar of the unit, said their treatment will last at least a month and some of the children are likely to be physically challenged.
Rajib, Kamrul, Dalish, Bajit, Ismail and Rimon have been released after treatment, said Dr Milton of surgery-3 unit.
Of them, Rimon has been referred to DMCH as he sustained severe injuries to his hands, he said, adding that Rimon may lose one of his hands.
Dr Maniruzzaman Shahin of the orthopaedic unit said this year they saw more victims of fireworks incidents and the scarcity of doctors and nurses during the Eid holidays only added to the misery of the victims.
