Police have found Oishee Rahman, 17 involved in the murder of her parents Special Branch Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman and detained at least five people in this connection.
“We are almost sure that she was directly involved in the murder. But it’s not clear at this time how many people were with her. We think we will come to know that shortly after interrogating the detainees,” police said. Oishee Rahman under the Detective Branch of police custody on Saturday admitted during the primary interrogation that she, along with some of her friends, stabbed her parents to death. Before killing her parents, she mixed sedative substances in their coffee.
Police also detained house help Sumi, 10, Oishee’s close friend Roni alias Joni in connection with the killing. Her female friend Trisha and two others, whose names were not revealed, were also picked up by the Detective Branch police personnel for interrogation.
Later at a press briefing on Saturday night, Detective Branch Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said that after Oishee surrendered to Paltan police station at about 2:30 pm, she was taken to the office of the deputy commissioner (Motijheel Division) and then to the Detective Branch office.
Undercover police also picked up several other people from different areas in the capital on the basis of Oishee’s confessional statement on Saturday.
Oishee’s father Mahfuzur Rahman, 48, and mother Swapna Rahman, 40, were found dead at their Chamelibagh flat on Friday afternoon. Oishee, an O-level student and the female house help had been missing since the incident. Police suspect the killing took place in the wee hours of Thursday.
Oishee came out of their Chamelibagh flat with her eight-year-old brother Ohidur Rahman and house help Sumi and left the building boarding a three-wheeler on Thursday morning.
The bodies of the slain police officer and his wife were found in Oishee’s bathroom on Friday afternoon. They bore several marks of stabbing wounds.
Police recovered some stolen ornaments of Swapna Rahman from two bags her daughter Oishee was carrying with her.
“We have come to know that she hired a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw for the whole day under the pretext that they would look for a flat to rent. Oishee also persuaded the driver with extra money for accommodation of the domestic help at his house for Friday night,” Monirul Islam said.
Police also interrogated two house guards — Mohammad Motaleb and Mohammad Shaheen — her uncle Iftekharul Alam, maternal Uncle Rabiul Alam, manager of their Chamelibagh flat Jahangir Alam and the CNG driver in connection with the double murder.
Oishee, the elder daughter of the slain couple, came to the Paltan Police Station at about 2:30 pm and surrendered to the police, Ashrafuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Motijheel Division said.
Later, she was taken to the Detective Branch office at Minto Road and from there Police immediately launched a drive across the capital and detained five persons including Trisha, Oishee’s friend and Sumi, the domestic help of the Rahman house. Oishee, an O-level student of Oxford International School, had been missing since the gruesome murder of her parents.
Police recovered the bodies of Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their residence in the city’s Chamelibagh area on Friday evening. There were marks of injuries caused from sharp weapons all over the bodies of the victims.
The couple had been living in the house with their two children – Oishee, 17 and Oihee, 7 and a house maid.
However, a case was filed by Rahman’s younger brother in this connection against unidentified persons.
Police also detained the security guard and the manager of the flat at Chamelibagh where Mahfuzur Rahman was living along with his family.
Meanwhile, Sohel Mahmud, an assistant professor of the Forensic Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital performed post mortem examination on slain Special Branch (SB) inspector Mahfuzur Rahman, and his wife Swapna Rahman.
After the autopsy, Mahmud told newsmen: “We found two deep stab injuries on the body of Mahfuzur Rahman — one in his throat and the other in his abdomen while 11 stab injuries were found on the body of Swapna Rahman.”
“Sensing the killers might have used sedative substances before carrying out the killing, we collected the viscera and sent it to Mohakhali for test. The inquest report showed that profuse bleeding was the main cause of their death,” Mahmud added.
