Bangladesh Under-23s stumbled to their first defeat of the ACC Emerging Team Cup as they lost to Sri Lanka U-23s by 62 runs at the Singapore Cricket Club yesterday. After being put in to bat the Sri Lankans finished on 259 for 6. In reply, Bangladesh were bundled out for 197.
Sri Lanka rode on a splendid 157-run opening stand in 33 overs between Udara Jayasundera (70) and Shehan Jayasuriya (85) and laid the foundation for its middle order. However, quick wickets from Sabbir Rahman (3-44) and Noor Hossain (2-30) slowed down the run-rate as they scored just over 100 runs in the next 17 overs.
The Bangladesh U-19s began encountered early stutters in their chase when they lost two wickets with just 19 runs on board. A 74-run partnership between Rony Talukder (56) and Litton Das (39) for the second wicket steadied the innings for a brief period, however the middle order crumbled after Das’s run out in the 28th over. The junior Tigers had no answer for left arm seamer Charith Jayampathi who took 5 for 20. Bangladesh will play their next game against UAE on August 22.
