Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Rajshahi University beat up a student suspecting him as an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir on Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Mohammad Bin Kashem, a fourth year student of Arabic department.
Witness sources said, BCL activists, led by the university unit president Mizanur Rahman Rana and general secretary Touhid-al-Hossain Tuhin, brought out a procession at about 1:00pm after Shibir president Ashraful Alom Emon and general secretary Saifuddin Eyahiya entered the campus.
When the procession reached near the administration building, Tuhin along with some other activists chased Kashem suspecting him as a Shibir activist.
They caught Kashem near the main university gate and handed him over to the Motihar police after beating him up.
Contacted, Tuhin admitted the incident saying, Shibir activists entered the campus and the BCL was determined to resist them.
Eyahiya alleged that Kashem was not their activist and said the BCL would have to face the reaction of their actions on the campus soon.
The Motihar police officer-in-charge, Abdus Sobhan informed New Age that Kashem was in their custody and steps would be taken soon after investigation.
