Bangladesh athletes will return empty-handed from the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China after taekwondo player Amirul Islam Mehedi failed to trouble his quarterfinal opponent, Alorani Anas of Jordan, in the 62kg category on Thursday.
Mehedi was dominated by a score of 28-1 as Alorani booked his spot in the semifinals.
With the conclusion of the taekwondo events, the Bangladesh contingent’s Asian Youth Games campaign ended without a medal after participating in Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Shooting, Golf, Weightlifting and Taekwondo.
Sprinters Ashik Kumar Halder and Irin Akter made the semifinals in their respective 100m sprint events but failed to qualify for the finals. Badminton player Ayman Ibn Jaman made it out of the first round in his event, but could not get past his Japanese opponent in the round of 16.
No other Bangladeshi athletes distinguished themselves in their respective disciplines, as the 3-on-3 basketball team fell in the group stage after losing to Macau, Iran and Korea, beating only Iraq.
10m air rifle shooters Risalatul Islam, Md Hasanul Banna, Sharmin Akter were eliminated in the preliminary round of the shooting event, and weightlifters Johura Akter and Mabia Akter failed to reach their personal bests. Golfers Afnan Mahmud and Liza Akter also disappointed the nation.
