Transport owners and workers will enforce an indefinite road blockade on 17 routes of Khulna division from today demanding a ban on the plying of unregistered shallow engine-run vehicles on highways.
District Bus-Minibus-Coach Owners’ Association and Motor Workers’ Union will enforce the blockade as per their earlier decision taken at a meeting on Thursday. At the meeting at the central bus terminal in the district town, representatives of the transport owners and workers had issued a three-day ultimatum to the authorities concerned to meet their demand, saying the road blockade will be enforced on the 17 routes if the demand went unheeded by Sunday.
‘The road blockade programme will be observed as vehicles of shallow engines like Nasimon, Karimon, Mahendra and Bhotbhoti were not banned on the 17 routes within the deadline,’ said M Anwar Hossain, acting general secretary of the Bus-Minibus-Coach Owners’ Association.
He said they will not allow even any motorcycle to ply on the highways during the blockade programme.
