Human rights activists in Rajshahi have expressed grave concern as law and order situation, especially crimes against women and children in the district, is deteriorating day by day.
They said torture against women and children were increasing in the district because of negligence of the law enforcement agencies. In August, a total of 13 crimes took place in the district against women and children, according to newspaper survey by non-government organisation Association for Community Development.
In a press release, ACD said eight crimes against women and children were committed at four metropolitan police stations while five at Godagari, two at Tanore, one at Puthi thana.
Among the 13 incidents, four were suicide, one suicide attempt, four rape cases, two murders and two cases of abductions.
Meanwhile Bangladesh Malila Parishad in a press release also expressed concern over the increasing number of crimes against women and children in the region.
Mahila Parishad Rajshahi chapter general secretary Kalpona Ray, talking to New Age, urged lawmen to be strict in dealing with crimes against women and children.
When contacted, Rajshahi deputy commissioner Mezbah Uddin Choudhury told New Age that they would discuss the issue in the upcoming district law and order committee meeting.
