At least 30 persons including two cops were injured in a clash between two groups of BNP activists at Ullapara upazila headquarters in Sirajganj district on Sunday noon.
Of the injured, 20 persons were admitted to Ullapara upazila health complex and Sirajganj General Hospital. Condition of two persons was stated to be critical, hospital sources said. During the clash, the clashers vandalized three motorcycles, a dwelling house and set the furniture of local BNP office on fire.
Police and local sources said that, two factions of BNP activists, one belonging to Ullapara upazila BNP President M Akbar Ali and the other belonging to Ullapara Upazila BNP General Secretary Azad Hossain, arranged separate programmes including processions and discussion meetings at the upazila headquarters on occasion of party’s founding anniversary.
The clash erupted at around 11.00am, when the two rival groups came face to face with two separate processions and activists of one group hurled a number of cocktails targeting the other group. The rival group counter attacked; which led to a fierce clash.
The clash that continued for about two hours, spread over different points in the upazila town including Science College gate, Chowrasta intersection, UNO office gate and post office area in a moment and the whole town turned into a battlefield.
