Several hundred first year students of Jahangirnagar University blocked the Dhaka-Aricha
highway for half an hour on Monday in protest against ragging.
The agitated students boycotted all classes and examinations and blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway for half an hour from around 10:00am, demanding punishment of the responsible students.
They later withdrew the blockade after the assistant proctor, Saiful Islam, visited the spot and assured them of taking necessary steps.
Campus sources said some political activists of 41st batch tortured a total of 11 fresher students physically and mentally Sunday night and one of them was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital.
The Bangabandhu Hall provost, Professor Farid Ahmed, told New Age
that they found the veracity of the incident and the university authorities would take proper steps against the accused students.
The pro-vice-chancellor, MA Matin, said the authorities were investigating the matter and steps would be taken soon.
However, the students of the 41st batch, in a press briefing, denied the charge of ragging against them.
