Family members allege police torture
An under-trial prisoner of the Barisal Central Jail died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in the city on Monday. The prisoner was identified as Jamshed Haoladar alias Jashem, 32, son of Abdul Gani Haoladar from Nathullabad area of the city and accused under narcotic control act. Family members, however, claimed the death was due to police torture.Md Shahidullah, Barisal airport police station in-charge, said subinspector Helaluddin of the city detective branch early July 29 arrested Jamshed along with five bottles of Phensedyl from his residence.
Subinspector Helaluddin lodged a case under narcotics control act with this police station on that day.
Fakhruddin Ahmed, deputy jailor, said Jamshed was handed over to jail custody on July 30 with sickness.
He was given primary treatment at Barisal General Hospital and then he was treated at the jail hospital.
Dr Saiful Islam of Barisal central jail hospital, after visiting him at 9:00am on Sunday, referred him to SBMCH prison cell as a patient of allergic attack and chest pain.
Then he was transferred to medicine ward at 1:30pm and Jamshed died there at about 2:30am early Monday.
Cause of death would be identified after autopsy, said Dr Sirajul Islam, deputy director of the SBMCH.
Subinspector Mukul of Barisal kotwali police station in deposition report of the body stated that he found allergic symptoms and inflammatory signs on the body.
The body was sent to SBMCH morgue for autopsy after lodging an unnatural death case, said Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station in charge.
On other hand Saddam Haoladar, a BCL leader and younger brother of Jashem, alleged that SI Helal, instigated by some BCL activists of rival faction, arrested his brother from the roof top of the house early July 29.
SI Helal, calling family members over mobile to DB office, demanded Tk 50,000 for release of Jashem.
But even after taking Tk 40,000, Helal did not release Jashem, Saddam said.
So the matter was brought to assistant police commissioner of detective branch Mahmud Hasan and due to his interference SI Helal returned the bribed money, but severely tortured Jashem under his custody, family members alleged.
‘We will lodge case after receiving post-mortem report against SI Helal for torturing my brother to death,’ Saddam said.
SI Helal, however, denied the allegations.
