The Detective Branch (DB) of police, which investigated the Odhikar claim of 61 deaths in police crackdown on a Hefazat rally in Dhaka on early May 6, on Wednesday pressed charge sheet against two officials of human rights watchdog Odhikar. Detective Branch Inspector Ashraful Islam, also the investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet on Wednesday afternoon against Nasiruddin Elan and Adilur Rahman Khan, director and secretary of the human rights watchdog respectively, before a Dhaka court.
The charges were brought under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act and Penal Code Act .Ashraful Islam after proper investigation submitted the charge sheet against two top officials of Odhikar, Monirul Islam, Detective Branch police joint commissioner, told reporters at Detective Branch headquarters at Minto Road in the capital.
He also said that the investigators have accused two top officials of Odhikar, a rights organisation, of publishing photos of injured Hefajat-e Islam activists showing them as dead ones to instigate people’s sentiment.
A team of Detective Branch police arrested Adilur Rahman Khan, Secretary of the human rights watchdog Odhikar in front of his Gulshan residence cum office on the eve of August 11, shortly after filing of a general diary (GD) with Gulshan Police Station for publishing a “false report” on the crackdown on Hefajat-e Islam in the capital’s Motijheel area on May 5.
Adilur Rahman Khan is now in Kashimpur jail.
After submitting the charge sheet before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka, investigation officer Inspector Ashraful Islam appealed with court for permission to arrest Nasiruddin Elan, director of the of the human rights watchdog Odhikar.
