Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, on Wednesday, made it clear that his party would not forge alliances with any party, and that it would contest the next general election alone.
“The countrymen want a change. To fulfil their demand, the Jatiya Party will contest the next general election alone, with plough as its symbol. If I’m voted to power, I’ll change the election system,” he said. Ershad was addressing the biannual conference of the party’s district and city units at Rangpur Council.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Jaitya Party chairman said the country was passing through a critical phase and warned that no one would be allowed to play with the Constitution.
Ershad expressed regret that about 7,500 cases were withdrawn during the tenure of the present government, but no single case filed against him was withdrawn. “A case has been continuing for 18-20 years. It’s not acceptable,” he said, adding no one could frame him through concocted cases.
Explaining that his party would not be a part of the Grand Alliance, Ershad said he would not go to anyone. Others would have to come to him, he added. The former president said that if the presidential election was held, the people would elect him as the country’s president. If voted to power, he would reorganise the Election Commission, he added.
Ershad said Yaba and other drugs had been ruining the country’s youth. He said the Jatiya Party-backed government must change the present situation.
Ershad said during the nine years of his government, there was law and order across the country.
