The Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Saturday said that the BNP wanted transfer of power through elections and by no other means.
He made the remarks at a discussion on ‘Freedom of Mass Media and release of Mahmudur Rahman’ at the Institution of Engineers organised by Association of Engineers Bangladesh.
Mentioning that many were questioning what the BNP was doing about movement, Fakhrul said that the BNP was a liberal democratic party, not an armed organisation or not a party to launch revolution or rebellion and the party was performing as an opposition party.
He said that the BNP did not believe in any undemocratic way or adventurism in politics and the party would force the government to accept the demand for holding elections under a non-party government through democratic and constitutional movement.
Presided over by the association acting convenor ANH Akhter Hossain, the discussion was also addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddiqui, Doctors Association of Bangladesh secretary general AZM Zahid Hossain, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists faction president Ruhul Amin Gazi, Dhaka University teacher Asif Nazrul, National Press Club general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed, film maker Chashi Nazrul Islam and Dhaka Reporters Unity general secretary Elias Khan.
Addressing another programme at the National Press Club, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said that no parliamentary election would be held keeping another parliament functioning. He said no healthy political party would join such election.
Moudud claimed that national unity was built up on the issue of election-time non-party government and the government must accept it.
