Transplants being done abroad, two arrested
An organised gang trading in human organs has returned to Kalai upazila of Jaipurhat where they are luring poor people into selling their kidneys for handsome amount of money.
The police on Thursday night arrested two alleged members of the gang.
The arrested persons were identified as Abdus Sattar, 45, and Mizanur Rahman of Bohuti village under Kalai upazila.
Sattar was previously accused in a case for similar offence, the police said.
Assistant sub-inspector of Kalai police Manirul Islam filed a case with the police station naming eight people as accused.
The police said that at least 20 people of different villages, including three women, had already sold kidneys in last six months for money after being motivated by the group.
The police said all kidney transplants were done in hospitals abroad, including India and Singapore, and brokers prepared the passports hiding the identities and addresses of the ‘kidney donors’.
Md Azadul, a resident of Ulipur village donated one of his kidneys for Tk 2,00,000. The transplant was done in India. But in the passport he used for travelling to India, his name was faked as Md Azad Hossain with a fake address at Japan Garden City at Mohammadpur in Dhaka.
Similarly, Jyotsna Begum of Borai village under the same upazila sold her kidney and travelled abroad for transplant with a fake identity. In her passport her name was mentioned as Mahfuza Begum, with a fake address at Gulshan in Dhaka. Brokers prepared the travel documents, the police said.
When contacted, Kalai police officer-in-charge Md Ramzjan Ali confirmed the incidents.
In August 2011, the police had detected the gang engaged in the illegal trade in human organs in the area and arrested several members of the racket.
According to the district health department, at least 42 people had sold off their kidneys through the racket in 2011.
