It rained for six hours only between 6am till 6pm totalling 37 mm on Sunday.
But it was enough to flood most of the capital streets, triggering massive tailbacks in central Dhaka and its suburbs as the rainwater took a long time to gurgle down the city’s clogged drainage system, causing immense sufferings to the commuters at rush hours. It was caused by an extended trough of a low pressure over the Andhra coast stretching up to the Bangladesh coast and the Bay.
The foul weather may continue for a couple of days with drizzles not lasting for long, meteorologists at the Dhaka met office said. High moisture contents in the air and occasional sun may cause high humidity and heat, the meteorologists warned.
The automobiles broke down in different parts of the city, negotiating the flooded streets, stumbling on pools of water due to depressions caused by long un repaired roads.
Not only the traffic snarls and drizzles with light to high intensity, irritated the people, particularly those who came out without rain coats or umbrellas but the transports during the rains.
People had to sit for hours waiting for the traffic to get moving, but to avail a transport like the ubiquitous rickshaw and auto-rickshaws, running without metres.
Their operators were seen refusing rain drenched school children and their mothers to go to their destinations. Even further dampening their spirits by asking higher fares.
Whatever buses were available they were sardine packed as they were stuck in long tailbacks allowing everyone to board them, leaving no rooms for others waiting at bus stands.
The rains flooded streets in Motijheel, Paltan,Bijoy Sarani, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Kamalapur, Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Sobhanbagh, Green Road and parts of Mirpur.
