The Indian Boarder Security Force personnel beat a Bangladeshi farmer to death along Ramkrishnapur frontier under Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia on Monday morning.
The victim was identified as Bazlur Rahman, 55, of village Mohammadpur in the district.
Local people and Border Guard Bangladesh sources said that Bazlur along with other four farmers went to a disputed piece of sandy land of River Padma near the demarcation pillar 157/1 to collect some grasses for the cattle.
Personnel of the BSF 91 battalion who patrol the Padma river frontiers of the two countries chased the farmers and caught Bazlur at about 10:00am. The BSF men took him at Baushmari camp under Hoglabaria thana of Nadia in India and tortured him to death, said 32 Battalion commander Lt Colonel Qazi Arman Hossain.
Informed, BGB rushed to the spot and recovered the body from a boat floating on the Padma at about 11:30pm.
Commanding officer of 32 Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion Lt Col Qazi Arman Hossain told New Age that Bangladesh strongly protested at the death in a flag meeting already held.
Kushtia circle Assistant Police Superintendent CA Halim told New Age that Daulutpur thana police recovered the body. The post-mortem examination was not yet performed, he added.
