Alliance unveils standards, names rights expert Krilla as president
The alliance of 20 North American buyers of Bangladesh garment products has appointed human rights expert and attorney Jeffrey Krilla as president of the coalition.
The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety on Wednesday announced the appointment of Krilla and four other steps it had taken as part of its effort to improve the condition of Bangladesh garment factories from which these American brands take products.
It said a lawyer at Dentons US LLP, Krilla brought extensive foreign policy experience to the position, having spent most of his career working around the globe on trade, development and human rights issues.
He served as deputy assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labour.
‘Jeffrey’s experience championing the rights of workers around the globe makes him the ideal person to lead the Alliance as it seeks to rapidly improve the lives of workers in Bangladesh,’ said Ellen O’Kane Tauscher, Alliance chair.
The Alliance, which was launched in July after the Rana Plaza disaster in April in Bangladesh, has also announced that it had developed a draft set of common fire and safety standards for garment units.
It said that the draft was discussed at an ILO-convened meeting in Dhaka on September 7.
The Alliance has worked to develop a safety training curriculum framework that would be used with factory managers and employees.
‘In addition, the Alliance is working to identify third parties in Bangladesh that can implement
these training programs,’ it said.
The Alliance has identified innovative technology solutions that will allow workers to anonymously report their safety concerns, said the announcement.
