Police yesterday arrested Russell Mia, the alleged killer of Barisal University (BU) student Saoda, at Kalshi Dighir Par under Bandar Police Station in Chittagong city.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police had conducted a drive at Dhumpara of Kalshi Dighir Par around 6:00pm, and arrested Russell from a mobile top-up shop, said Jahedul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station.
Russell, a second-year student at the Department of Management Studies of the same university, is the son of Harun Matubbar at Gyanpara under Patharghata in Barguna, police said.
During primary interrogation, Russell admitted that he had knifed Saoda as he could not restrain himself after the break-up of their relation, said the OC, adding that he [Russell] had fled to Dhaka immediately after the incident.
“Russell came to Chittagong on Tuesday. He used to pass night on buses parked at the roadside, and roam around the streets during day,” Jahedul said.
Chittagong police had informed the investigation team of Soada murder case about Russell’s arrest, the OC said, adding that Russell would be handed over to them.
Russell knifed Saoda, 18, a first-year student at the Department of Accounting of the BU, on the university campus on September 5.
She was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by an air ambulance, but she succumbed to her injuries late in the afternoon.
Students of the BU had been waging different programmes since the killing, demanding the arrest of and exemplary punishment to killer Russell, our Barisal correspondent adds.
