An art exhibition was organised at Karail slum in the city’s Gulshan area on Friday with the massage of ‘Dignity in Industry’. The exhibition was entitled ‘Akhter Begum’ – the two most common names for the garment workers in the country.
Some 22 photos were on display for celebrating the hard working Bengali women, in support of their struggle for socio-economic justice.
Bengali photographers from Counter Foto, a photographic platform, in collaboration with Susie Taylor and Jason Motlagh, provided the artworks for the exhibition.
Photographer and artist JR, his project Inside OUT and The Soulside OUT, a project of Susie Taylor, arranged the exhibition.
The interactive public exhibition was installed in collaboration with JAAGO Foundation
Susie Taylor and Jason Motlagh were reporting on the Bangladeshi garment industry since early 2013.
Susie said they were exhibiting the art works of women, mostly garment workers, so that they were acknowledged for their hard work in developing the apparel sector.
‘I believe that empowered women will heal humanity, and right now women in Bangladesh should be acknowledged for the strength they’ve brought to this important industry,’ she said.
Jaago Foundation also collected garbage from the waterfront of the slum during installation of the artworks.
