Voting to elect 25 registered graduate representatives to Dhaka University senate will begin today in 27 polling centres outside the capital.
The elections would be held between 10:00am and 1:00pm, said the university registrar, Syed Rezaur Rahman, told New Age. The second and final phase of the elections would be held on September 21 outside the Dhaka City in 13 polling centres and September 28 in inside the Dhaka city in three polling centres.
A total of 34, 545 voters would cast their votes during the elections. The voting would be counted after the end of all phases, the register said.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party- and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Jatiyatabadi Parishad on Friday demanded that the voters should be allowed to cast their votes with the national identity card as 70 per cent voters, they alleged, are yet to get voter cards.
They also demanded at least three more polling centres inside Dhaka for the convenience of the voters.
They placed their demands at a press conference at the National Press Club.
Jatiyatabadi Parishad chairman Monirul Hoque Chowdhury read out the statement at the conference, attended, among others, by former pro-vice-chancellor AFM Yousuf Haidar, journalist
Mahfuz Ullah Khan, DU syndicate member Tazmeri SA Islam and cultural activist Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron.
