The finance minister, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, on Saturday rejected a proposal for an aviation university as an aviation faculty under any of the universities could be opened.
Muhith made the comment addressing a seminar on ‘Sustainable development of the aviation sector in Bangladesh,’ organised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Monitor at the VVIP terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The main objective of the aviation sector should be to produce skilled manpower in different areas of aviation and the establishment of a separate university for this was not necessary, Muhith added.
The CAAB chairman, Mahmud Hossain, presented a keynote paper where he said that a well-equipped civil aviation university only could meet the future demand of aviation professionals in Bangladesh and the Asia Pacific region.
He said that there were only three operational flying training schools and two aircraft maintenance engineering training schools in Bangladesh. ‘If we can set up an aviation university, we can produce skilled manpower for the aviation sector.’
Mahmud sought assistance of reputed banks and investors for the task which would help to meet the requirement of human resources in the aviation sector.
The civil aviation and tourism minister, Faruk Khan, said, ‘We will take steps to set up an aviation university and talk with banks for the investment’ in the establishment of such a university. ‘We can set up the university under a public-private partnership scheme,’ he added.
