Banks asked to remain alert against fake currency notes
Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday asked scheduled banks to take necessary measures against fake currency notes so that the counterfeiters cannot run the illegal operations ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The BB issued a letter to managing directors and chief executive officers of all commercial banks asking them to guard against use of counterfeit notes under the Dhaka City Corporation North and South as significant amount of money would be transacted at sacrificial animal markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The BB also asked its all branch offices to take same initiatives in this regard, a BB official told New Age on Wednesday.
Besides, the central bank had completed preparation to pump Tk 22,000 crore to mitigate liquidity crisis in the inter-bank transaction ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja festivals, he said.
The BB started pumping the money on October 2, he said.
All branch offices and the head office of the BB will disburse the notes till October 10, he said.
Besides, the BB gave direction to another 12 scheduled banks to disburse the money among their different 12 branches in the capital, he said.
Of Tk 22,000 crore, the BB will pump fresh notes amounting to Tk 10,000 crore and it will reissue the remaining amount, he said.
For detecting the counterfeit notes, the BB asked the banks to increase use of fake note detection machines in all branches of the commercial banks across the country, another BB official said.
The BB asked the banks to set up booth with counterfeit detecting machine at the sacrificial animal markets to detect the fake notes, he said.
The central bank asked the banks to set at least one booth by a bank at every major sacrificial animal markets, he clarified.
The central bank urged the information ministry to publish advertisements in print and electronic media about the counterfeit notes to create awareness among people, he said.
