Local people of Tanti Bazar area in Old Dhaka caught three police personnel red-handed including a sub-inspector of Cantonment police station on Saturday noon for their alleged involvement in robbery in the name of recovering ‘hundi money’. The arrested police personnel were identified as sub-inspector Abdul Kaiyum, Constable Alamgir Hossain and Abul Khair. All three were working at the Cantonment police station including sub-inspector Abdul Kaiyum who was a member of plain clothes team of the same.
According to the locals, the plain clothes police team identifying themselves as members of Detective Branch police conducted a raid at the gold shop of businessman Shiblu Ahmed when two of his employees Aman and Nazrul were carrying Tk.32 lakh in two bags on way to their employer’s Keraniganj residence as banks were closed on Saturday.
At one stage, the police team forcibly tried to snatch away the two bags containing the money and tried to flee the scene.
Sensing trouble Shiblu and his employees shouted for help, hearing the scream locals rushed to the scene and caught the police men along with the money.
On information, a team of Bangshal police went tot he scene and rescued the three police from the angry mob.
Bangshal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Kuddus Fakir said a four-member team led by Cantonment Thana police SI conducted a drive in a residence of Tanti Bazar area.
When they left the house with a good amount of hundi money, house owner shouted for help and locals caught them.
The accused police officials are being interrogated by senior police officers at the police station.
Deputy Commissioner of Lalbagh Division, Harunur Rashid told The Independent, “We have interrogated the arrested police personnel and primarily found their involvement in the incident; the businessman will file a mugging case with Kotwali police station”.
