BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said that Awami League-led Grand Alliance government is baffled about what to do as only 20 days are left till the scheduled end of its tenure. “The government has only 20 days and the countdown has already started. The government has become really baffled about what to do after it,” he added.
Alamgir, the opposition spokesperson, was addressing a meeting of Jatiyatabadi Rickshaw-Van Sramik Dal delegates at the National Press Club.
The government has already apprehended that it would meet a tragic consequence if the next general election is held under a non-party CG oversight, he said. The politics of vengeance preached by the ruling party has plunged people into a deep cavern of crisis and the government must step down for the betterment of the country, he added.
Referring to the government’s overenthusiasm to meet the country‘s power demand, Alamgir said the Awami League is following an erroneous method in the name of fulfilling the country’s power and energy requirement. “A certain vested quarter wants to make the country dysfunctional. The Awami League is patronising this quarter,” he added. The country’s jute industry has been put at the brink of destruction. The RMG sector is heading towards the same path, said the BNP leader.
Alamgir also criticised the government for its involvement in different scams like Padma Multi Purpose Bridge project, Hallmark, Bismillah Group and share market debacle. The country’s banking sector is facing a severe crisis and the government is responsible for this, he alleged.
These problems could be addressed successfully if the next general election is held under the non-party CG provision, he said.
“The Awami League paralysed the country in 1994 to 1996, demanding restoration of the non-party CG system to the Constitution. Now it has just taken a u-turn from the system to cling on to power through illegal means,” he alleged.
If the BNP is voted to power, the ruling party leaders will be put in the dock for their misuse of power and misdeeds, mismanagement and for launching repression on opposition partymen, he warned.
Alamgir also assailed the government for its national broadcasting policy, saying that the people have been deprived of their rights to speak freely.
Terming the policy as anti-people, the BNP spokesperson said members of law enforcement agencies can now detain anyone in accordance with the policy.
“Where is our right to speak freely? People from all walks of life should unite to face the government on the street,” he said.
BNP leaders Abdus Salam and others spoke at the programme, with Mahbub Alam Badal, president of the front, in the chair.
