Former BNP minister Abdul Alim, who was sentenced to jail until his death on war crime charges on Wednesday, was dressed in prisoners’ uniform and sent to prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. The jailer of Dhaka Central Jail, Mahbubur Rahman, told New Age that he was first taken to the jail soon after the verdict and later transferred to the BSMMU after changing into prison uniform. Alim has been undergoing treatment at the hospital, he added.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded jail until death to Alim, a former minister under BNP regime, for committing genocides and killings during the liberation war in 1971 in his hometown in Jaipurhat.
Arrested on March 27, 2011, Alim got conditional bail on March 31, 2011 due to his ill health.
Unable to move independently, wheel chair-bound Alim needs support of his children and other attendants.
His bail was cancelled on September 22 and he again landed in jail.
Alim, 83, was tried on 17 counts of crimes against humanity. Nine charges, including two for genocides, six for killing were proved, while eight weren’t established.
