The plainclothesmen arrested eight members of a gang involved in illegal trading of firearms and drugs in the city’s Demra and Jatrabari areas early Friday.
The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police also recovered two foreign firearms along with 11 bullets, 1500 bottles of Indian Phensedyl syrup and 4000 sedative injections from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint DB team, led by its assistant commissioner M Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury and AC Jahangir Alam, conducted a special drive at West Sarulia under Demra police station at about 3:45am.
During the drive, the detectives arrested seven gang members — Kamal Hossain, 28, Md Kabil, 22, Md Dalim, 24, Md Milon Mia, 23, Md Aziz, 21, Md Joynal, 26, and Md Minto, 47.
They also recovered the two firearms loaded the 11 bullets, Indian contraband syrup and the sedative injections from their possession.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested criminals revealed that they had long been involved in bringing consignments of drugs and firearms from Chapainawabganj frontiers and selling those in different areas of the capital.
In another drive, the plainclothes police arrested gunrunner Sumon, 30, from Jatrabari area at about 4:30am.
Describing Sumon as the ringleader of the gang, DB sources said he was wanted in a number of cases.
