The bullet-riddled body of a university student was recovered from his bedroom at Ambarkhana in Sylhet city early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Shahdath Hossain Imon, 24, a first year student of Bachelor of Business Administration at privately-run Sylhet International University. He came from Lakshipur. Imon’s father is an employee of Chhatak Cement Mills in Sunamganj, police said.
A team of Biman Bandar police entered the bedroom of Imon at Dattapara in Ambarkhana area around 12:30am after breaking open the door and recovered the body riddled with bullet in his belly.
The lawmen also seized a light gun found beside the body.
Local sources said Imon along with another youth named Kawsar Alam was living in a rented room in the basement of a building at Dattapara.
A neighbour of Imon came to meet with Imon around 10:30pm on Friday and saw his room locked. As he did not get any response despite repeated efforts, he informed the house owner and other people of the incident.
Being informed, Biman Bandar police reached the spot and recovered the body.
When contacted, Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Ezaz Ahmed said that the doors and windows of Imon’s bedroom were closed, but the ventilator of his room was found open when the body was recovered.
‘Investigation was going on to ascertain weather Imon had committed suicide by shooting himself or any other person shot him to death,’ he added.
Biman Bandar police officer-in-charge Khayer Fazal told New Age that the body was handed over to the family members in the afternoon after an autopsy had been carried out at SylhetOsmani Medical College Hospital.
