Readymade garments workers in Gazipur and Narayanganj on Sunday held protests and blocked road, demanding payment of their arrears and festival bonus.
In Gazipur, the workers observed strike demanding payment of their wages and bonus in the Barabari and Maleker Bari area of the city on Sunday.To avoid further deterioration of the situation, the authorities closed the factories for the day.
S M Samsur Rahman, assistant superintendent of Gazipur industrial police, said at about 8:30am, the workers of Parksin garment factory started strike and protest in the factory, demanding payment of their Eid bonus without joining their work.
Later the authorities assured them of the payments on Monday and announced holiday for the day.
The workers of Tex Tech Sweater factory at Saydana Malekr Bari also started protest demanding 10-day salary of the current month.
At one stage, the agitating workers ransacked glasses and furniture of the factory.
On information, police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation assuring the workers of looking into the matter.
In Narayanganj, hundreds of workers of a garment factory blocked the road at Sanarpar under Shiddhirganj police station on Sunday, demanding arrears and festival bonus.
Workers of Lipi Knitwear factories at around 10:00am held demonstrations inside the factory and damaged some machine as the authorities did not pay their wages according to the earlier declaration.
The protesting workers said the authorities earlier assured them of clearing their all dues including festival allowance on
Sunday.
Workers of the factory took to the streets and vandalised 10 to 12 transports at Sanarpar, halting traffic for an hour.
At around 11:00am, Shiddhirganj police rushed to the spot and gave assurance to agitating workers of settling the matter talking with factory authorities and then the workers withdrew blockade.
Sub-inspector Jinnah of Shiddhirganj police said the traffic resumed and the situation became
normal.
