20 murdered during Eid vacation

At least 20 people were killed and 85 people injured in three days of the eid vacation from Tuesday to Thursday, showing a severe deterioration of law and order situation.
But the police administration claimed that the law and order situation was under control.
Inspector general of police Hassan Mahmood Khandkar told New Age: ‘I don’t know about the murders. But what I can say is that police successfully tackled the law and order situation during Eid and Puja vacations’.
In the capital, at least five people including a woman were killed at Bhashantek, Kadamtali, Sher-e-Banglanagar, Kalabagan and Mohammadpur during the Eid vacation.
New Age correspondents reported that at least 15 people were killed at places in 14 districts.
In Khagrachari, an activist of United Peoples Democratic Front, Pratim Kumar Tripura, 25, was shot dead by miscreants in Matiranga upazila of the district on Thursday night.
Matiranga police officer-in-charge Mainuddin Khan said Pratim might have been killed over dispute to establish supremacy in the area by his opponent group.
In Khulna, two murders were committed within 48 hours at Rupsha and Phultala upazilas of the district.
On Wednesday, Raju Bepari, 23, a student of BBA of Uttara University in Dhaka who was fatally injured with armed attack by a group of stalkers, succumbed to his wounds early on Thursday.
In another incident, unidentified miscreants gunned down a young boy on Tuesday near Phultala rail. The deceased was identified as Shumon Mridha, 22, son of late Latif Mridha of Damodar village.
In Cox’s Bazaar, a youth Jafar Alam, 32, was shot dead by opponents on Thursday night.
Alamgir Hossain, OC of Maheshkhali police station, said there was a feud among Jafar’s uncle Golam Bari and locals Abu Hena and Mohammad Hossain. Jafar might have been killed by the hired goons in connection with the fued.
In Gaibandha, police recovered the body of a youth, Madar Chandra Das, from a pond at Govindaganj on Thursday noon.
In Pabna, a youth, Jahidul Islam, 20, was stabbed to death allegedly by laundry owner Rafique over quarrel at Ataikula of the district on Thursday noon. Selim Hossain, 17, was also stabbed when he tried to save his brother,
In Bagerhat, after allegedly slitting her husband’s throat when he slept, a woman at Rampal in Bagherhat, tried to kill herself by swallowing kerosene on early Friday. Police arrested Halima Begum, the wife of deceased Siraj Sheikh, said Kazi Daud Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rampal police.
Halima was admitted to Rampal Upazila Health Complex, he added.
In Brahminabria, a man was stabbed to death by opponents on Thursday noon. The deceased, Habibur Rahman, 52, was from Araishidha village of Ashuganj upazila.
In Comilla, police recovered the body of a Saudi Arabia expatriate, Rabiul Haque, hanging from a tree at the Laksam of the district on Thursday.
Harunur Rashid, OC of Laksam police, said they could not confirm whether it was a suicide or homicide.
In Chapainwabganj, police recovered the body of a youth, Nayan Chowdhury, from Mahananda River on Thursday.
Nayan was from Chaknarendrapur village of Shibganj upazila. He was missing for three days.
In Kishoreganj, a youth, Jamal Uddin, was killed and 25 other were injured in a fight between two groups over establishing supremacy in the Mithamain upazila on Thursday.
In Kushtia, a man, Jahurul Islam Joy, 44, was hacked to death by his in-laws over family feud in Mirpur upazila of the district on Wednesday night.
In Sunamganj, police recovered the body of an unidentified man floating in a pond at Hasanabad village of Chatak upazila.
In Manikganj, the sadar police recovered the body of an unidentified old man aged about 75 from the bus-stand area on Tuesday. Rezaul Haque, OC of sadar police, said there were several injury marks on the body.
In Tangail, Kalihati police recovered the body of a woman, Josna Begum, 40, from Elenga bus-stand of the upazila on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, at least 85 people were injured in Gopalganj, Munshiganj, Narail and Savar of Dhaka in fight over establishing supremacy in their areas during the Eid vacation.
