United Nations Day was marked on Thursday in Dhaka with the urge for creating opportunities for the country’s young generation to assert themselves in development sector.
The UN resident coordinator Thushara Fernando stressed the need for role of youth for economic growth. Inaugurating UN Day 2013 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, he sought opportunities for young people so that they could play significant roles in the country’s economic development.
The UN Country Team organised the event themed with ‘Youth for Development’.
‘There must be opportunities linked to youth-centered development that is not only based on inclusive social development but identifying the human capital of this generation’s young people,’ Thushara said, adding, ‘This means sustainable and equitable economic growth.’
He said, ‘Collectively, we [the UN] aim to promote evidence led advocacy, knowledge sharing and innovation that promotes youth centered inclusive growth in Bangladesh.’
The foreign minister, Dipu Moni, remembered the role of youth during country’s independence.
Among others, youth representative Ms Junanjina Ahmed, UN information centre officer-in-charge Kazi Ali Reza, and Bishwa Shahitya Kendra chairman Abdullah Abu Sayeed also addressed the occasion.
