Former Bangladesh cricketer Sheikh Salahuddin passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 44.
Salahuddin was an off-spinner and featured in six one-day internationals for Bangladesh in 1997. He worked as the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Divisional Coach for Khulna Division at the time of his death.
Salahuddin represented Khulna for six seasons at the first-class level from 2001 to 2007. He was also a member of the triumphant ICC Trophy-winning side in 1997.
A minute’s silence was observed by both Bangladesh and New Zealand before the start of the first ODI at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in memory of Salahuddin.
Our Khulna correspondent adds, Sheikh Salahuddin breathed his last at 5:45 am while under treatment at the Nargis Memorial Hospital in Khulna.
He left behind his wife, a son, a daughter and a large number of relatives and well wishers.
The first Namaj-e-Janaza of Salahuddin was held at 11:00 am at the Khulna Stadium. He was later laid to rest at his family graveyard after the second Namaj-e-Janaza held at his native village, Rajapur Eidgah Maidan.
Both the Namaj-e-Janazas were participated by a large number of people from all walks of life including leaders of political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations.
