Hosts England Under-19 team made a good start in the five-match Youth ODI series outplaying touring Bangladesh U-19 side by 84 runs in the first match at Grace Road in Leicester on Saturday.
With this win, English youth team took 1-0 lead in the five-match one-day series after clinching the two-match four-day Youth test series 1-0. Hosts England beat Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the first test while the 2nd test ended in draw.
Sent in to bat first in the first ODI, England Youth team amassed 282 runs for 7 wickets in stipulated 50 overs with Sam Northeast and Jake Manuel contributing 113 runs in the opening partnership.
Opener Sam Northeast, who played a superb innings of 149 runs against Bangladesh in the 2nd Youth test, scored his 2nd consecutive ton on Saturday making 123 runs off 129 balls with 13 fours and a six.
Another opener JM Manuel scored 54 runs off 48 balls with eight boundaries.
Besides, LWP Wells (25), H Riazuddin (25) and AJ Wheater (15) were the other major contributors for the England youth team.
Bangladesh skipper Mahmudul Hasan claimed three wickets for 40 runs, debutant Shabbir Rahman grabbed two wickets for 47 runs while Nur Hossain and Abul Hasan took one wicket apiece.
Four Bangladeshi players-Alauddin Babu, Mominul Haque, Shabbir Rahman and Shohag Reza-made their debut in the 1st Youth ODI.
Chasing a huge target, Bangladesh Under-19 team, despite an early jolt losing four wickets for 51 runs, managed 140 for 9. But confident batting by the tail-enders enabled the visitors to take the score to 198 for all in 49.5 overs.
One down Asif Ahmed scored 51 runs off 87 balls with six fours while number nine Alauddin Babu contributed not out 40 off 55 balls with four fours and a six.
Alauddin Babu pairing with number eleven Shohag Reza added 58 runs for the last wicket to carry the total to 198.Besides, opener Amit Majumder (30) and skipper Mahmudul Hasan (14) were he other notable scorers for Bangladesh.
LWP Wells, H Riazuddin and CP Wood took two wickets each for 21, 22 and 29 runs respectively.
The 2nd youth ODI between the two sides was in progress today (Sunday) at the same venue with Bangladesh scoring 163 for 4 in 38.3 overs after winning the toss.
The 3rd Youth ODI between the two teams will be held on July 21 at Northampton County Club ground while the 4th and 5th matches will be held on July 23 and 24, both at Hove County Club ground.
After the youth ODI series, Bangladesh will play two youth T20 matches against their counterparts on July 28 and 29, both at the London Road in Seaford.
