The customs officials seized 320 gold bars weighing around 37 kilograms from a flight of Qatar Airways at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Tuesday morning.
The estimated worth of the seized gold bars will be Tk 15 crore, said Bikash Dev Roy, assistant commissioner of customs. Cabin crew found the gold bars in a bag kept under seats No. 41-A and 41-B as all the passengers got down from the aircraft around 6:00am, he added.
The flight of Qatar Airline-634 from Doha landed at the airport about 5:00am.
On information, customs officials went to the spot and recovered the gold bars about 5:45am, Bikash added.
None was arrested as the carriers got down from the aircraft, leaving the gold bars, he said, adding that the carriers left the bars sensing danger.
A case was filed in this connection.
Gold smuggling has increased alarmingly as gold bars weighing around 300 kilograms were seized at the airport this year.
