Renowned writer Mir Mosharraf Hossain’s 166th anniversary of birth was celebrated in Kushtia through a two-day programme at the writer’s ancestral homestead at Lahini para which is about 4 km far from Kushtia town.
The programme that ended on Thursday included a discussion, presentation of music and recitation, staging of a theatre, children’s art and writing competition, display of tricks with sticks and a fair. Kushtia district administration arranged the programme.
Born on November 13, 1847, Mir Mosharraf Hossain wrote 35 books including novels, plays, poems, an autobiography and discourse. The writer is famous for his popular novel Bishad Sindhu, an epic featuring the battle of Karbala which was published in three sequels in 1885.
Among other significant works are Jamidar Darpan and Bashanto Kumari.
‘Mir Mosharraf Hossain was the first Bengali Muslim writer who successfully connected Bangla literature with Muslim community. As a writer, he focused on contemporary events, history and traditions,’ evaluated eminent Lalon researcher professor Abul Ahsan Chowdhury, who is also a teacher of Bangla department of Islamic University.
