The Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority on Monday conducted a drive to reclaim two city canals from encroachment. A DWASA enforcement team, led by magistrate Khalilur Rahman, conducted the seven-hour drive to save Kalyanpur Cha and Ramchandrapur canal.
The magistrate said they started the drive near the National Orthopaedic Hospital at Agargaon where the Kalyanpur Cha canal started and continued till the Kalyanpur Main canal near the ACME building.
He said that they demolished some shanties, tea stalls, shops build occupying the canal land.
The DWASA executive engineer, Firoz Ahmed, said for lack of manpower the authorities fail to conduct regular drive.
He has said that DWASA reclaimed the Kalyanpur Cha canal in 2012 and this year they have started drive from here so that the illegal occupants cannot expand encroaching.
Firoz said that they demolished some shops of medical equipment for physically challenged people, which were at the entrance of the canal.
