A three-day theatre festival organised by the Chittagong based troupe Nandimukh ended on Monday at the Chittagong Shilpakala Academy.
The festival was the first installment of a year-long programme chalked out by the troupe titled Natya Troyee to celebrate its 24 years of theatre practice.
On the concluding day, the theatre department of Fame School of Dance, Drama and Music staged Molière’s George Dandin ou translated and directed by Ashim Das. The comic play showcases the folly a man commits when he marries a woman of a higher rank than his own.
On Sunday, Nandimukh staged its latest production Tobuo Manush, which is an adaptation of Amal Roy’s Kenona Manush by Abhijit Sengupta. The play depicts the fact that human life is nothing but a struggle to survive and whenever a major political uprising have taken place it claimed thousands of human lives.
Nagorik Natyangan Ensemble (Dhaka) staged Jugalbandhi, which is written by Manoj Mitra and directed by Jamal Uddin Hossain on Saturday. The play sheds light on the dark side of the political practices in the subcontinent through a bizarre storyline where a lunatic reasons with the king – who is depressed after the birth of deformed twin sons – and tries to show the benefits of having twins who are joined at the backs.
Besides theatre, Nandimukh also organsied a photography exhibition featuring images of life and work of renowned theatre personalities of the world to introduce the audience to the leaders of theatre.
About the festival, troupe chief of Nandimukh Abhijit Sengupta told that they received huge response from the audiences. ‘Chittagong holds a rich tradition of theatre and the troupes of the city have always been successful to produce high quality productions, and the audience is also cordial about theatre. So it was a successful,’ also added Sengupta talking about theatre practice in Chittagong.
The festival was inaugurated by theatre personality Shantuno Biswas in presence of Dr. Anupam Sen, vice chancellor of Premier University, as chief guest and Khaled Helal, president of Chittagong Group Theatre Forum, as special guests.
