Majestic Mushfiq highlights day of tons

Mushfiqur Rahim blasted an unbeaten 145 on Friday to propel Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to joint-second in the Dhaka Premier League standings during the second round of Super League matches held across different venues. Mushfiq clobbered the Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club bowlers all over BKSP-2 at Savar as Sheikh Jamal registered a six-wicket win to move to 16 points, level with both Doleshwar and Mohammedan Sporting Club, who also moved to 16 points after their 76-run victory over Kalabagan Cricket Academy at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium at Fatullah.
In the other match of the day at Mirpur, Gazi Tank Cricketers consolidated their place at the top of the points table with 18 points after their six-wicket win against Prime Bank Cricket Club.
Prime Doleshwar v Sheikh Jamal
Electing to take first strike after winning the toss, Prime Doleshwar posted 304-7 in their 50 overs, led by Englishman Joshua Cobb, who smashed 123 off 130 balls with the help of 10 fours and five sixes.
Dawid Malan provided able support with a 66-ball 61 as the fourth-wicket pair of Cobb and Malan put on 132 runs to take Prime Doleshwar to the brink of a match-winning total.
National captain Mushfiq, however, had other ideas, as the little man partnered with Australian Steven Crook (100 off 84 balls) for the fourth-wicket to decimate the Prime Doleshwar bowlers.
Together, Mushfiq and Crook scripted 189 runs as Sheikh Jamal saw off their target with four overs to spare, losing four wickets.
The top-order of Sheikh Jamal, comprising of national cricketers Jahirul Islam (0) and Junaid Siddiqui (7) and Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Munaweera (8) all departed for low scores as the Dhanmondi-based outfit were in early trouble.
Mushfiq, though, ensured Sheikh Jamal were still in the hunt as he and Crook began the rescue act. The 25-year-old national skipper bludgeoned a dozen boundaries and five sixes while Crook, whose ton featured seven fours and half a dozen over-boundaries, went better than a-run-a-ball.
Unsurprisingly, Mushfiq was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
Gazi Tank Cricketers v Prime Bank
Batting first after winning the toss, Prime Bank scored 247-8 in their 50 overs. English cricketer Ravi Bopara struck a fine 81-ball 95, while opening batsman Saykat Ali chipped in with 60.
Gazi Tanks’ Arafat Sunny, the highest wicket-taker in the league with 26 scalps, took 3-57.
In reply, Gazi Tanks coasted to their target in 47.5 overs, losing four wickets, as an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 127 runs between Mahmudullah (67 not out) and Ryan ten Doeschate (68 not out) guided them home.
Mahmudullah was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
Mohammedan v Kalabagan CA
An all-round performance from England’s Samit Patel enabled Mohammedan to join Sheikh Jamal and Prime Doleshwar on 16 points in a three-way battle for the second position.
Batting first, man-of-the-match Patel’s responsible 122-ball 86 helped Mohammedan to put up 226-9 in 50 overs.
Patel then took 3-25 from eight overs as Kalabagan were all out for 150 in 40.1 overs in their pursuit of the target.
