A man was burned alive and his wife critically injured in an arson attack allegedly by his rivals over a land dispute in the district’s Lalpur upazila early yesterday.
The dead was Habibur Mandal, 55, of Fugipur Charpara village. His wife, Sufia Begum, has been undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.Matiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lalpur Police Station, said Habibur had a longstanding conflict with his co-villager Haus Ali over a piece of land.
Haus and his accomplices might have set fire to the house of Habibur around 1:30am when the couple was asleep, the police official said.
Hearing their screams, locals rushed to the spot and found Habibur dead. They rescued Sufia from the blaze in a critical condition, and sent her to Rajshahi Medical
College Hospital.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
