At least 30 shops were gutted in a fire at Kazirbazar in Sylhet city early Sunday, fire brigade and civil defence sources said. They said that the fire broke out from a shop at around 3:00am and rapidly spread to other shops. Madaris Ali, a night guard at the market, said that the fire spread to the other shops through electric wires. After hearing scream, he said, police rushed to the spot and tried to put out the flames with the help of local traders, but failed.
Being informed, three firefighting units from Taltala station and two units from Dakkhin Surma station reached the spot and doused the fire at around 4:30am.
Fire Brigade and Civil Defence assistant director Shahidur Rahman told New Age that they were still trying to establish the cause of the fire. ‘We were not sure whether the fire broke out from an electric short circuit.’
The loss caused by the fire would be about Tk 1 crore, he said, adding that no casualty was reported in the fire incident.
