The National Board of Revenue has again extended the deadline for income tax returns submission by one month to December 31, NBR chairman Ghulam Hussain said.
‘Individual taxpayers will be able to file their income tax returns till December 31,’ Hussain told reporters after a seminar on alternative dispute resolution related
to income tax held in the capital.
It was the third time the revenue board extended the deadline. The current closing date for the returns submission expires today.
NBR officials said the revenue board extended the timeline again due to poor response from individual taxpayers in filing returns and political instability.
About 17 lakh people are now holding taxpayer identification numbers in the country. But only around 7 lakh have so far submitted the tax returns, they said.
Previously, the NBR had extended the deadline twice — first to October 31 and second to December 1 due to poor response from the taxpayers in filing the returns by the
September 30 deadline stipulated in the Income Tax Ordinance-1984.
NBR chairman said that the deadline had been extended in line with the closing date for obtaining online generated taxpayers identification number (e-TIN). Though e-
TIN is not mandatory in submitting income tax returns, most of the taxpayers are eager to file their returns with e-TIN, he said.
As taxpayers have time limit for obtaining e-TIN till December 31, the deadline for returns submission has been extended by one more month, he added.
In the fiscal year 2012-13, around 9 lakh taxpayers submitted income tax returns.
