Pro-VC still confined
Stalemate continued in Jahangirnagar University as teachers teamed up under different banners have been on demonstrations to push for the vice-chancellor’s resignation.
Students, teachers and other members on the staff teamed up as the Teachers, Students, Officers and Employees’ Unity Forum have been on demonstrations since November
20 demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor, Anwar Hossain.
The teachers continued with their strike and sit-in for an indefinite period in front of the administrative building where the acting vice-chancellor MA Matin and the
pro-vice-chancellor Afsar Ahmed had been confined for the 11th consecutive day on Saturday, demanding the announcement of a date for the elections to the vice-
chancellor’s panel.
The acting vice-chancellor Matin said that ‘the teachers have kept them confined for eleven days although they have postponed the senate polls in keeping with their
demand.’
Left-leaning teachers of the university teamed up under the banner of Save Jahangirnagar on Sunday went on demonstrations on the campus against the teachers rallying
for the vice-chancellor’s resignation.
They brought out a procession on the campus and held a rally at Shaheed Minar where some Chhatra League activists expelled from the organisation earlier tried to foil
the rally.
Leader of left-leaning teachers Nasim Akhtar Hossain presided over the rally. AKM Shahnawaj, Ahmed Reza, KM Mahiuddin, Kazi Saiful Islam and Sohel Ahmed spoke.
Nasim Akhtar said that a section of teachers were holding the rally for the vice-chancellor’s resignation, making the campus situation volatile.
